NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Texas defensive tackle Malcom Brown and linebacker Jordan Hicks were voted to the Walter Camp All-America Team, which was announced Thursday evening by the Walter Camp Football Foundation.
Both Brown and Hicks were second-team selections after keying the Longhorns defense, which has been among the best in the nation this season.
Texas ended the regular season ranked No. 26 in the FBS in total yards allowed (348.3 per game), No. 12 in passing defense (186.3 ypg), No. 8 in yards allowed per play (4.67), 16th in passing efficiency defense (108.34 rating) and tied for seventh in sacks (3.25 pg).
Brown, a finalist for both the Bronko Nagurski Trophy (nation's best defensive player) and Outland Trophy (top interior lineman in the country), leads the team in tackles for loss (14) and sacks (6.5). The junior has 64 stops and ranks tied for fifth in the nation in sacks by defensive tackles (0.53 pg).
After a pair of injury-plagued seasons, Hicks finally broke through in 2014. He started all 12 games and was named one of 20 semifinalists for the Chuck Bednarik Award, given to the nation's top defensive player. The senior has a team-high 138 tackles (11.5 per game) and eight double-digit tackle games, including a career-best 18 stops vs. both UCLA and Iowa State.
Brown is also on two other All-America teams. He was named a first-team choice by CBS Sports on Wednesday and by USA Today on Thursday.
This is the 21st-straight year the Longhorns have produced at least one All-American from one of the nationally-recognized organizations. Last season, DE Jackson Jeffcoat and PK Anthony Fera were first-team Walter Camp All-Americans, as well as earning consensus All-America honors.
About the Walter Camp All-America Team: Walter Camp, "The Father of American Football," first selected an All-America team in 1889. Camp – a former Yale University athlete and football coach – is also credited with developing play from scrimmage, set plays, the numerical assessment of goals and tries and the restriction of play to eleven men per side. The Walter Camp Football Foundation – a New Haven based all-volunteer group – was founded in 1967 to perpetuate the ideals of Camp and to continue the tradition of selecting annually an All-America team. The Walter Camp All-America team is the nation's oldest college football All-America squad.
