AUSTIN, Texas – Myles Turner
finished with a career-high 26 points to go with nine rebounds and six
blocks as the No. 9/9 Texas Longhorns used a 58-point first half to roll
past the Lipscomb Bisons, 106-61, on Tuesday night at the Erwin Center.
Texas
(9-1) scored 100 points for the first time since Nov. 15, 2011 when it
scored 100 against Rhode Island. It was the first time to score at least
106 points, since Dec. 7, 2009, when the Horns notched 107 against Long
Beach State.
All 14 players scored in the contest,
including the five walk-ons. Just over nine minutes into the game, seven
different Longhorns had already registered points.
Turner shot 9-of-15 from the field and a perfect 7-of-7 from the free-throw line, while senior forward Jonathan Holmes added 17 points and also going 7-of-7 from the charity stripe, while grabbing six boards and three blocks.
Freshman forward Jordan Barnett scored a career-high 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting, including 3-of-3 shooting from beyond the arc, in a career-high 24 minutes.
Junior guard Demarcus Holland recorded a career-high eight assists and added nine points, while Kendal Yancy also registered a career-high seven assists.
After going scoreless and only grabbing one board in the first half, Cameron Ridley finished with eight points and seven boards. Connor Lammert
finished with a near double-double, with nine points and nine rebounds
and is averaging 9.3 rebounds over the last three contests.
Texas
set a school record, swatting 10 shots in the first half. Before
tonight, Texas had only recorded nine blocks in a half on two occasions,
last year season against Kansas on Feb. 1 and against Kansas State on
Feb. 3, 2007.
Texas finished with a 53.8 shooting
percentage (35-of-65) from the field and 50.0 percent (12-of-24) from
three, while holding Lipscomb (4-6) to a 30.6 shooting percentage
(19-of-62). The Horns registered a season-high 24 assists against a
season-low nine turnovers to finish with a 2.67 assist-to-turnover
ratio. The Horns cleaned up the glass, out-rebounding Lipscomb, 55-28.
Texas has recorded at least 50 rebounds in three games this year and has
held at least a plus-20 advantage in four.
All five walk-on players scored in game. Sophomore forward Danny Newsome started off by scoring his first points of the season with 4:16 remaining and Brandon Allums
hit a free throw to give the Horns their first 100-point game in three
years. In his first collegiate game, freshman guard Joe Schwartz drained
a three. Ryan McClurg made a free throw and Tarale Murry capped it off with a layup to give the Horns 106 points.
Malcolm Smith led the Bisons with 17 points on 6-of-11 shooting.
Texas
continues their home stand of nonconference games, when it plays host
to Long Beach State on Saturday. Tipoff is set for 7 pm CT and will be
televised nationally on Longhorn Network.
